Shu Brocade specifically refers to silk jacquard brocade produced in the Chengdu region of Sichuan, China. Made primarily from mulberry silk, it is renowned for its vivid colors, intricate craftsmanship, rich patterns, and durable texture. Shu Brocade ranks first among China’s “Four Famous Brocades” and is known as the “Mother of All Brocades.” Its weaving techniques were included in China’s first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006. In 2009, as an important component of “Traditional Sericulture and Silk Craftsmanship of China,” they were inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
We preserve the core craftsmanship of Shu Brocade, including warp-faced and weft-faced brocade techniques, continuous warp and broken weft weaving, traditional color coordination, and pattern design. At the same time, we incorporate contemporary aesthetics and modern design requirements to offer fabrics featuring both traditional motifs and original designs. Made primarily from mulberry silk, it is renowned for its vivid colors, intricate weaving, rich patterns, and durable texture. It ranks first among China’s “Four Famous Brocades” (Shu Brocade, Song Brocade, Nanjing Yunjin Brocade, and Zhuang Brocade) and is known as the “Mother of All Brocades.” Its weaving techniques were included in the first batch of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2006. The distinctive craftsmanship of Shu Brocade is mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Warp-Faced and Weft-Faced Brocade: Shu Brocade is broadly divided into two categories: “warp-faced brocade” and “weft-faced brocade.” Brocades in which patterns are created primarily with multiple colored warp threads are classified as warp-faced brocade, while those in which patterns are created with multiple colored weft threads are classified as weft-faced brocade. Warp-faced brocade is unique to Shu Brocade and is an important feature distinguishing it from other famous Chinese brocades.
Continuous Warp and Weft: One of the most distinctive features of Shu Brocade weaving is the “continuous warp and weft” technique. Weft threads of different colors pass directly through the openings in the warp. When a particular color is needed, that colored weft thread appears; when it is not needed, it remains hidden. This technique creates richly colored and intricate patterns.
Colors and Patterns: The traditional color palette is based primarily on the five fundamental colors of red, yellow, blue, white, and black, complemented by intermediate colors such as green, purple, and other blended hues. Traditional color-blending techniques create subtle transitions and vibrant visual effects, with colors shifting like mist or clouds. Shu Brocade features a wide range of motifs, including flowers and birds, scrolling foliage, auspicious animals and birds, and cloud patterns. Designs may take square, linear, geometric, symmetrical, bead-like, and medallion forms.
Today, the preservation and development of Shu Brocade continue to balance traditional craftsmanship with innovation. While maintaining core traditional techniques such as pattern drafting and pattern tying, as well as shuttle weaving and flower weaving, artisans and cultural organizations are also exploring new approaches. These include developing cultural and creative products, digitally preserving traditional patterns through resources such as pattern databases, and bringing Shu Brocade culture closer to the public through initiatives such as “Intangible Cultural Heritage + educational programs” and “Intangible Cultural Heritage + community” projects.
